If it’s August, the Santa Barbara Foresters must be heading to Wichita for their annual appearance in the National Baseball Congress World Series. Before they go, the Foresters will conclude the regular season this weekend at UCSB against the East L.A. Dodgers. Game times are 5 p.m. Saturday, August 1, and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Coach Bill Pintard’s crew is trying to break out of a three-game slump. The Foresters have been outscored 22-2 in a pair of losses to the Conejo Oaks and a 7-0 defeat to the Blues in San Luis Obispo on Friday night. Santa Barbara still is the class of summer league baseball in the area, compiling an overall record of 35-13 and winning the California Collegiate League pennant with an 18-6 showing. Conejo (13-11) was second, five games back.

The polo team Patagones has reached the championship match the Robert Skene Trophy in its first appearance at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. Patagones knocked of former champion Audi Polo 14-12 to reach Sunday’s final at 3 p.m. against Grant’s Farm, which beat Lucchese 15-12. Audi and Lucchese will play the consolation match at 1 p.m.

Shannon Yocum of Palos Verdes had to work overtime to defend her championship in the Santa Barbara Women's Open golf tournament last Thursday. The recent UC Berkeley graduate finished the last round at Sandpiper in a three-way tie with her younger sister Stephanie Yocum and Kendra Vallone. All three went bogey-par on the first two playoff holes. Shannon clinched the title with a birdie on short par-4 No. 12 hole. Stephanie Yocum placed second in a card off with Vallone. In the first round at Glen Annie on Wednesday, there were two holes-in-one – Chris Roe of Santa Barbara finding the hole at No. 2 and Pat Gallagher of Fallbrook at No. 9.

The annual Santa Barbara Classic, a better-ball pairs tournament, will take place at the Santa Barbara Golf Club next weekend, August 8-9.
