Ever since Zach Braff hatched the playlist for Garden State, it seems every indie-minded romantic comedy has been trying to out-soundtrack the one that came before. On this accompaniment to the quirky Joseph Gordon-Levitt-Zooey Deschanel film, (500) Days of Summer, listeners get a winning combination of old-school genius and new-school experimentation, courtesy of everyone from The Smiths to The Temper Trap. But the true highlight here comes in the meticulous selection of newer tracks. Wolfmother’s “Vagabond” and the Black Lips’ “Bad Kids” are about as classic-rock influenced as today’s tunes come, and listening to them alongside Hall & Oates hits like “You Make My Dreams” tends to make everything sound just a little bit sweeter. Add to that a cover of The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” by Deschanel’s own musical project, She & Him, and you get a mixed tape that appeals to every generation.
