Police are reporting 18 felony arrests, 122 misdemeanors, and 36 DUI arrests between 8/5 and 8/9, the Fiesta weekend, as compared to 33 felonies, 104 misdemeanors, and 21 DUIs during the 2008 celebration. Among the worst Fiesta-related infractions were the typical drunken rowdiness. One woman, initially handcuffed to keep her from disturbing the peace, managed to bite an officer on the shoulder. She was arrested for battering an officer.

Following the conclusion of his preliminary hearing last month, Corey Lyons entered a not guilty plea to murdering his brother and sister-in-law in a shooting at the couple’s Mesa home in May. Prosecutor Gordon Auchincloss, who indicated the case could go to trial anytime prior to 1/25, said a decision on whether to pursue the death penalty has not been made. Lyons will be

Dr. Earl Lynch, former Public Health medical director, has settled his lawsuit against the county for an undisclosed amount. “[It is] more appropriate to settle than to litigate,” said Lynch’s attorney, Michael Ring, who also said Lynch was satisfied with the resolution. Lynch, who himself was facing allegations of harassment and humiliation from more than one female doctor in the department, had sued the county for wrongful termination and violating labor code.

Michael Douglas’s son could face life in prison following his arrest in Manhattan late last month. Cameron Douglas, 30, was arrested for selling large amounts of methamphetamine over a three-year period. Douglas was previously arrested in Santa Barbara in 2007, where his father previously resided, and charged with possession of cocaine. Cameron Douglas now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum period of life.
