A person completing a driving exam ran his or her vehicle into the Department of Motor Vehicles building on Castillo Street, causing significant damage to the building.
Neither the driver nor the test examiner were injured in the accident, which happened just after 9:30 Thursday morning, August 27. The vehicle jumped a curb and stopped after plowing two feet into the corner of the building on the south side. Shelving, books, files, and photos were knocked off the wall of the interior of the building. There was extensive damage to the building, but an inspection by city building officials proved the building to be intact structurally, according to a press release from City of Santa Barbara Fire Department Captain Chris Mailes.

According to Mailes, who I couldn't get a hold of prior to leaving for the day, the driver was 24 years old. "He had already failed his driving test when he returned to the DMV," Mailes wrote in an email. "The examiner instructed him to place the vehicle in park. Instead of putting on the brake, he floored it into the building."

If this dude ever actually does get his license, will the local authorities issue an alert of some kind through the media to warn the public?

I think his chances of getting the priviledge to drive have been put on kabosh mode.
But hey, the guy's got a car (albeit damaged) & the will to keep trying, this translates to his someday getting a license to kill, err, I meant drive.
It would be of GREAT service to the community to warn the public about this guy WAY in advance :) henry

Ya know, I can see how someone who has just taken a driving test and is nervous and worried (probably hadn't been told yet that he didn't pass) and flustered... And if he's already 24 and doesn't have his license yet...I'm just sayin', I've done (and said!) stupid things myself when under pressure.

Did you see the usual SoCal cardboard box construction of the wall? We demand green thinking but keep building energy wasting boxes with no substance.
If this had been Chicago with the double brick wall, the car would have gone nowhere but crunch.

Bird, the reason for the lightweight construction you see here in CA as opposed to the CBS (concrete built structure) you see in Chicago is because of building codes that take earthquakes into account.
If there's an earthquake, would you want a bunch of bricks coming down on you?
Also, out in CA the "balloon" type construction is used. This is so the building falls "around you" rather than on top of you.
Back in Florida where I'm originally from, the CBS structure is the norm.
But then again they have tornados & hurricanes down there, stuff that the light materials won't survive.
But you're right, had it benn brick, CRUNCH! :) henry

What a story!Good local photojournalism.Chances for cute pot shots too. How about "I said Stop Not Floor It!" or "Usually you stop at the curb buddY" or "Where'd ya get your licence? A Cracker Jack Box". How about taking up a collection to buy the guys car from him.I think I see another bond issue. Lets get a signature drive together.

HAHAHA! My question is this: Was there anyone in the office that got crunched @ the time of the incident? I'm sure there's a pair of soiled pants or skirt somewhere in that building!
As for the Cracker Box issued license, he ain't even got that yet. You want signatures to keep this guy off the road, you got mine! :) henry

To the no nothing person who ridiculed the construction of the building and championed the "double brick" construction of his beloved (and dirty) Chicago, have you ever heard of EARTHQUAKES? Figure it out before you blurt it out.

Cattleman, already took care of that for you above. Sometimes people not familiar w/ construction codes & the area's environment (which influence building codes) will say the darnest things :) henry

Hahahahah, we should give that guy a medal! Have you ever had to go in there. The DMV people in that office can be total jerks. (a couple of them are quite helpful though but still).
