Six Reasons to Give Some Love to KCSB 91.9 FM

Whether tuning in for public affairs, eclectic music, or live coverage of sporting events, we should all appreciate the existence of KCSB 91.9 FM, the independent radio station broadcasting from beneath UCSB’s historic Storke Tower. Currently, the station is in the midst of its annual fundraising drive, a weeklong event that helps to raise money for the station’s many programs, events, and community services. Last November, KCSB had to put the drive on hold due to the Tea Fire, choosing to scratch the event in order to bring up-to-date news coverage to the masses. Fund Drive 2.0 kicked off last week and will run through this Monday, February 9. Here are six reasons to give.

1) Non-commercial: KCSB is Santa Barbara’s only hometown station without commercials, meaning that you can leave it on all day long, and not hear one annoying jingle.

2) Public participation: As a community-oriented station, even you can have your own radio show. The station provides free year-round training to individuals and groups who would not otherwise have access to the public airwaves.

3) Event promotion: In addition to the radio, KCSB also hosts numerous films, concerts, and lectures throughout the Santa Barbara region. Previous events have included music and art festivals at La Casa de la Raza and lectures by Amy Goodman and Jeremy Scahill.

4) Emergency broadcast: Since UCSB has emergency generators and won’t ever run out of power, KCSB is your source for breaking news during wildfires, earthquakes, and other disasters. They’ve also teamed with independent.com to sponsor the IndyAlert system and to host our reporters on their programs.

5) They need your support: KCSB does not receive a single dollar from the University of California-it is only supported by fees that the students vote to support, and your generous donations.

6) They give back: For donations of more than $50, KCSB sends you a thank-you gift. For $100 or more, you’ll be entered into a grand prize drawing. To donate, call 893-2424 or visit kcsb.org.
