We’re not quite sure what the members of Pittsburgh’s Black Moth Super Rainbow are on, but by the end of their latest, Eating Us, we’re pretty sure you’ll want some. The five-piece electro-psychedelic band packs in the weirdness in no small way here, incorporating everything from Moog-y atmospherics and Mellotron to nearly indecipherable vocoder-filtered lyrics. But that’s not to say that Eating Us is all trippy electronica, oh no. Dreamy numbers like “Smile the Day After Today” and “Gold Splatter” sound more like an experimental version of Air than anything else on the album, and the spacey “Dark Bubbles” exquisitely mixes Go Team-style drums and cymbals with explosive organs and floating melodies. Combined, the effort plays out like an electro orchestra that’s equal parts instrumental genius and barely restrained insanity
