This outstanding reissue has one of the great stories in modern music behind it. In 1964, Harlem was among the country’s most difficult places to live, especially for young men. Through the auspices of the Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited Act (thus the “Har-You” of the group’s name), professional percussionist and civil rights leader Montego Joe was able to form this Latin-tinged funk orchestra with a group of Harlem boys, aged 16-18. Three years later, in 1967, they recorded their only album for the legendary ESP-Disk label. It’s a blast of percussion-heavy Latin soul that owes a big debt to both John Coltrane and the traditional Afro-Cuban movement known as descarga. Wait until the hip-hop producers get ahold of this one, as no doubt you will be hearing it for years to come.
