Chicago’s favorite folk rockers have been called a lot of things throughout the years—“meditative,” “uncommercial,” “experimental”—but few have ever dared call them comfortable. Yet on Wilco’s seventh studio album, Jeff Tweedy and Co. finally choose to embrace their straightforward rock roots. That’s right, Wilco’s growing up, and it sounds oh so sweet. Gone are the over-stylized beeps and bloops from A Ghost Is Born and the countrified slow dances of Sky Blue Sky; in their place, we get building ruminations on self-loathing (“One Wing”), the Petty-esque “I’ll Fight,” and piano-driven New Wave on “Bull Black Nova.” By record’s end, sweeping guitar solos and heartfelt lyricism stick out more than any one track, making for one of the most easily digestible—and sonically delicious—Wilco albums to date.
