On Friday, June 19, a massive and old oak tree located in the parking lot of Hidden Oaks Golf Course fell over. Anyone who’s visited the course, its clubhouse, or even driven through the surrounding neighborhood would recognize the old oak, which served as a centerpiece of the community.
Here are some photos of the toppled tree from Kevin and Sarah Coffman, friends of Independent.com who live adjacent to the course, which is located off Puente Drive near More Mesa.

That was about a 150 year old oak, killed in about 30 years by over-watering the non-natives planted underneath it. The area surrounding the clubhouse extending down towards the 5th hole also has numerous large oaks in jeopardy; not necessarily from over-watering, but from the existence of all the ivy which is trapping moisture in the soil. In talking with a homeowner behind the clubhouse, she has seen at least 2 large oaks succumb to this same issue over the years.
Get it together people...these are native oaks which evolved in an arid environment.
