Justin Michael, who vows to represent Santa Barbara’s youthful voters in the city’s next mayoral election, appeared briefly on The Oprah Winfrey Show this past Thursday afternoon to discuss a personal experience with domestic violence that landed him behind bars in County Jail for five days two years ago. The Oprah episode focused on men who have beaten women as part of Winfrey’s reaction to the much publicized incident in which singer Rihanna was allegedly beaten by her boyfriend, singer Chris Brown. Michael was identified only as “Justin” in the episode, with no last name nor any indication of his political ambitions.
According to police reports and court documents, Michael was arrested September 1, 2007, for punching and strangling a woman with whom he was then living on the Mesa. He pled guilty to two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence, and was sentenced to 75 days, five of which he served in County Jail and the remainder on house arrest. He was also sentenced to three years probation and ordered to attend anger management classes, which he has done. He has now served one year of probation and has two left.
Michael is the son of former Hope Ranch resident Reed Slatkin who was convicted of bilking investors out of $680 million several years ago in what was then the largest recorded Ponzi scheme in history. Michael was interviewed for the Oprah show on the premises of Zona Seca, where he attended anger management counseling. “I am a person. I have made mistakes. I learned my lessons,” said Michael. “I’m going to save the world so that others don’t make the same mistakes.” Michael said that he loved and respected women, adding, “If you compromise yourself with someone else, there’s a lot of help in Santa Barbara. There are people here who can help you.”
Michael, a 29-year old musician and promoter, said he’s the only candidate seeking to represent the under-40 voting block in Santa Barbara. He said that media inquiries into his criminal experience serve only to distract from the real issues, which he said include gang violence, a crumbling economy, and educational reform. “Kids in the street are getting stabbed in front of Saks,” he exclaimed. “Like never before, people will come out of the woodwork to support me,” he said. “When history is written, it will show that I fused together the new Santa Barbara with the old. Michael acknowledged he had no prior experience in electoral politics - locally or elsewhere - but said that should prove no hindrance. “If Barack Obama can become president, then I can become mayor,” he said. “Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger - he’s not even from California.”
While the Santa Barbara mayoral race appears many months away, this November’s city elections promise to be an intense and tumultuous affair. Key issues will be the sorry state of the city’s finances, gang violence, the political influence wielded by unions representing city employees, and a proposal to reduce the maximum allowable building height downtown. With four seats up for grabs - including the mayor’s - the balance of power could swing in any direction. Councilmembers Iya Falcone and Helene Schneider have been positioning themselves for the mayoral contest for at least two years already, and in recent months, Chamber of Commerce President Steve Cushman has also indicated he’s entertaining a bid for the top spot. In addition, Michael Self, an activist with Santa Barbarans for Safe Streets has said she hasn’t made up her mind whether to run for council or for mayor.
Last week, longtime planning commissioner and former water commissioner Harwood “Bendy” White announced that he’s running for council. White, a land use consultant by profession, is one of the architects of the Save El Pueblo Viejo initiative to reduce downtown’s maximum height limit from its current 60-feet to no more than 40 feet. In addition, Dianne Channing, a Riviera neighborhood activist who ran for council four years ago, is again in the running, as is David Pritchett, a creeks advocate now serving on the city’s Transportation and Circulation Committee. Incumbent Grant House is also running. While House, White, Schneider, and Channing are not technically running as a slate, they will share offices and the same campaign consultant, Jeremy Lindemann.
Roiling the political water most recently are rumors that a lifelong Montecito resident, upset at the rate of growth and development, is shopping around for candidates to support. He has reportedly vowed to spend up to $50,000 per candidate, and another $50,000 in favor of the building height initiative.

Either this guy Mike is stupid or is truly a fool. No one is going to vote for an un-accomplished, convicted criminal with a penchant for self promotion. Well almost no-one...
What are you trying to promote here Mike? The fact that your father was a criminal and that you are as well? Appearing on Oprah as a recovered wife beater is not a good thing!
This is a lot like the last election when "what's his name" ran, lost and was arrested a short time later in Las Vegas for assaulting a democratic volunteer and carrying an assault rifle.
You really cant make this stuff up.

I had never heard of Jusin Michael Slatkin before the articles in local media over the last week. From all I have read in the last few days, he sounds delusional at best, scheming and narcissistic and delusional at worst. Anyone who proclaims he is going to "save the world" has some serious psychological problems. And would we really want to elect a mayor who would be on probation for much of his first term?
He has said, "everyone has made mistakes". True. But not everyone has chosen to physically harm other people. Somehow it seems that should not be refered to as "just a mistake".
By the way, does anyone know if he is still a scientologist? http://www.truthaboutscientology.com/...

While I understand and support the Indy's plan not to cover this guy's "candidacy," perhaps it's wise to rethink this.
Every time this little hustler opens his mouth he seems to dig himself in deeper. Perhaps that old adage that there's no such thing as bad PR will not apply here to the future endeavors for which he's so obviously seeking to promote himself. The fact that he considers this story to be "positive coverage" is laughable as is the continuing dialog that he's having with himself via multiple email identities.
(Almost) unbelievable!

Any former transgressions are all clearly hyperbolic.
This is the type of stable and experienced leadership with a solid moral background that we need to lead this city! Only J-Mike can take charge of this city where so many others have failed.
Mr. Santa Barbara Junior is well on his way to proving all the naysayers wrong. HE IS THE VOICE OF MY GENERATION!!

Nothing personal kid but I'm not voting for anyone still on probation and it seems to me that crimes are different it's one thing to steal a candy bar and quite another to attempt to strangle someone..I don't think I want a mayor that might lose it one day snap and waste the city council,(even though they stink) We need someone in there that is going to walk the talk not just blow out alot of hot air with B.S. Promices..Someone who knows and understands the politics of Santa Barbara and it's people, because were all different here....Good Luck, but your not getting my vote.

It would be a serious error in judgement for anyone to vote for a candidate still on probation, no matter what he says he stands for (vague as it is.)
Honestly, one's personal "house" needs to be in order before running for mayor of any city or town. Anyone who votes for him isn't thinking any clearer than he apparently is.

Wow, ya'll just "stoned" a person most all of you don't know. Neither do I, but OMG, to judge so harshly on so little info? I personally have no tolerance for violent persons, however, unless one knows all of the FACTS about someone, how can you attack on such a personal level? Regardless of who his father is, he's his own person. And perhaps a little guidance and/or compassion would be a more civil approach (a couple of you offered that - sort of). I have no doubt all of the posters lining up ready to bash this guy, have a few ghosts in their closets as well. If this is a young man, whether he's misguided or not (how'd YOU like his father for a dad right about now), he's searching for his purpose. I say, Justin, if you want to go for it, don't let anything stop you. To fail isn't necessarily failure, and at best you'll learn something in the process. But remember, building your character is more important than building your career sometimes. No matter how annoying or adversarial we women may get, you've no right to lay an aggressive FINGER on us, nor anyone else for that matter unless you're defending yourself. I wish you well, and I apologize for the cruel things said here in this blog ~ not the type of people I want to know.

"Let's get focused on the issues of this campaign. I went on Oprah to shed new light on an important issue. I'm looking forward to addressing job loss, health care and above all education."
ok, if you want to help, then use your 15 seconds to help repay your debt on the domestic violence issue. You have a golden opportunity to do some real good by describing what changes you've made, AND HOW. Sure, there's no sbustitute for actual work. There's no "How to not beat your significant other home course". It ain't that easy. But what people need to know is that it is a learned behaviour that can be changed.
You're not going to get this albotross off your shoulders. It's going to follow you. You can't just say "Let's focus on the issues". The fact that you want to "focus on the issues" means you haven't got it yet that this IS a major issue. In fact, it's now YOUR issue. Deal with it.
Everyone:
Probably the worst advice one can give is to "Just don't do it". A person who is enraged to the point that they'll hurt someone they love isn't capable of making that decision. It's like telling a drunk person not to drive. You don't decide not to drive when you're drunk. You decide not to drive by giving someone else the keys before you start drinking. You decide not to hit someone by learning the warning signs that you're getting that angry, and doing something to difuse it, like taking a time out and talking to someone else.
This is behavior that can change. We can and should support abuse victims in any way we can. But we also need to encourage and help abusers to change so we can stop the cycle.
Justin- taking on any other task in your life right now will be turning your back on your debt. Anything else you take on will be an abject failure until you confront this particular 'issue' head on. Using it to just get recognition so you can 'focus on the issues' is going to burn you in the worst way.

I would say I think he's qualified because he isn't a politician, he has no hidden agenda and JMIKE truly cares about the well being of the city of Santa Barbara. I feel all the negative connotation toward jmike is doing nothing more but fueling his campaign. From what I hear, this woman who has made outrageous claims has a track record as long as the Santa Barbara City football field in regards to having allegations against men in this town. I think the independent should cover this story in a positive way. It is news worthy. He is running. Excuse me, please, but I haven't read anything here about the background experience and skills that establish this candidate's ability to lead city government. A mindset that says that physical abuse of women is something "many young men struggle with" is not a recommended trait for public leadership. Twenty-nine is old enough to have developed a sense of self-control and respect for the rights of other people. I certainly hope you do NOT represent the "under forty" generation. I am 29 as well, and an SB native. Justin does NOT represent me or my generations sensibilities.
I do think the city could use a little bit of new 'tech' thinking, but I strongly believe that Justin is NOT the right person for the task. His miss-use of cutting edge jargon (social networking, web2.0 etc) seems a little bit sleazy to me as well.
Based on his YouTube channel, his website, his FaceBook spamming, and all his other bizarre behavior locally, it seems to me that he is a very self-involved, troubled individual.
I am not particularly moved by his appearance on Oprah either. He seems to 'say all the right things', but I fear it's just more 'lip-service' and no substance.
The alleged cocaine habit bothers me. The battery charge REALLY bothers me. His apparent utter lack of humility amazes me (in a bad way).
Not to mention the discomfort I have with him comparing himself to Obama, or calling himself 'visionary'.

OK, I broke down and watched all 8 minutes and forty-four seconds of this link, plus your link on reaching out to Hispanics, and another link.
One thing you say that I like is that you'd restore arts to the schools. I too think we emphasize too much sports at the expense of music and arts. The rest of what you say is pure platitudes.
You do not "address hard issues". At a little after 6 minutes into the link on this post, you refuse to reveal one of the names of your advisors; what are you hiding?
As for Hispanics/Latinos/Mexicans, speaking Spanish does not qualify one's ability to connect to them any more than Hermann Goering's and Mussolini's ability to speak English enabled them to connect to the allies. Furthermore, spoon-feeding everything in Spanish is core to the paternalistic mentality that reinforces their feeling of alienation from American culture. You also fail to give any specifics as to how you will connect with them. Here it is: Mexicans/Latinos/whatever term you feel comfortable with laugh, cry, and bleed the same way everyone else does, so have the guts to stand up to the P.C. mindset and stop pandering to the idea that they must be treated differently.
As for gangs, once again we have a candidate in Justin Michael who doesn't make the connection between a demented national de facto border policy supported by both major political parties which is all about creating a huge base of expendable cheap labor while enabling Mexico's corrupt government. In short, if Mexico had to fix its problems, we'd have less impovershed people coming up here and flooding already overcrowded neighborhoods, and less people would be dying crossing the border.
Sorry Justin, so far, you're all about platitudes and no real specifics, not to mention your reluctance to talk about who is advising you. This old cynic is not impressed by your lack of years.

Oprah finds them all, doesn't she?
Meanwhile she lives in this area, is rolling in dough, and spends all her money in Africa creating jobs and educational opps, while people right here (in the country that made her rich) are homeless, out of work, and hungry.
Nice "thanks, America", huh?
Thus she has zero credibility as a caring human being. Too harsh? Too bad; it's not anything everyone else has said and doesn't have the guts to say out loud.
With all these useless celebs living in SB, there is NO reason anyone should be out of work or homeless...but they pi** away all their resources in Africa (and hey, next year another country could be declared fashionable instead of Africa, but you can be sure it won't be HERE!) and people here are sleeping in doorways. Well, until they get run off by whoever owns the property.
So, Oprah...shut the he77 up about Africa and everyone else's personally poor behavior. You're a parasite and an overrated, overexposed gossip show host.
