For the first time in a long time, our friends over at KJEE are getting serious — well, sort of. Since the start of the month, a whole team of the station’s (gender inclined) supporters has been collecting cash and rockin’ the ‘stache in honor of Mustache March, the crew’s now-annual fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Under the guidance of one of the station’s directors, deejays like Dave Hanacek and the Morning Show’s Spencer and Adam have even joined forces for the cause and are currently sporting some impressive (and some not-so-impressive) facial hairs.

“We have a difficult time growing mustaches,” Spencer admitted, recounting his use of faux whiskers during the station's 2008 drive. “I went through puberty like this year, which is good. Last year I had people coming up to me saying, ‘That’s what I’m sponsoring?’”

This go-round, the hair — no matter how minimal — is for real, and the money they’re raking in is nothing to be scoffed at. So far, the station has raised more than $1,800 from local businesses and individual listeners, squashing last year’s $1,300 mark to smithereens. And all the money is being given directly to multiple sclerosis research.

The National MS Society, which has been raising money to fight the disease since 1946, will be hosting one of their many walks for a cure on Saturday, April 4 at Leadbetter Beach (801 Shoreline Dr.). The Santa Barbara walk event also marks the end of the mustachioed road for KJEE's Spencer and Adam, who will be hacking off their facial hair post-race.

“After last year’s race, Spencer drank his,” explained Adam. “And we ran the whole 10K,” added Spencer. “That’s six miles worth of sweat collecting on your face.”

All gross man challenges aside, the guys are definitely going all out for the drive. They’re encouraging donors to drop money (cash or checks) to the radio station, located at 302 B W. Carrillo St. Friendly Mustache March sponsors will score a personalized on-air shout out of their choosing.

“They can have whatever they want put on the radio — people can just be dicks,” promised Spencer. Along with the radio lovin’, those who donate will receive a generous thank you, a high quality certificate of gratitude, courtesy of Adam and his lackluster Photoshop skills, and an invite to the station’s Mustachio Bashio at Sharkeez, which will take place at the end of the month.

Curious sponsors are being asked to email adamkjee@gmail.com with questions. And for information about Santa Barbara’s upcoming MS Walk, or other fundraisers in your area, visit nationalmssociety.org.
