A man and woman were arrested after a short standoff with Santa Barbara police in an apartment complex Thursday morning on Chapala Street.

After receiving a call from witnesses who saw a man with a gun at 1825 Chapala Street at 11:30 a.m., police responded in force, blocking off the 1800 block. Several officers drew weapons, pointing them at apartment 19.

It didn’t take long before a 30-something-year-old man emerged, shirtless and wearing jean shorts. He was arrested after walking backward toward police with hands on his head. A moment later, a woman, identified only as Elizabeth, did likewise.

Officers found a Ruger 10/22 rifle loaded with 46 rounds underneath a bed.

According to Sgt. Chad Hunt, witnesses told police that in a confrontation between two men, one emerged carrying a rifle. The three people involved are believed to be acquaintances.

Hunt said that man who had the weapon pointed at him left, and shortly after the incident contacted police. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances before formally booking any of the people involved.
