The ties in the South Coast’s Democratic Party machine are tight, but lines are already being drawn in the 2010 Democratic race for the 35th District Assembly seat.

Santa Barbara County’s 2nd District Supervisor Janet Wolf told The Independent on Monday that she is endorsing Susan Jordan, the wife of the current Assembly seat holder Pedro Nava, who the supervisor called “extremely thorough and very bright.” Wolf’s colleague Doreen Farr, the county’s 3rd District Supervisor, indicated she will be supporting Das Williams, the Santa Barbara City Councilmember who is running against Jordan, and citied Williams hard work in the community on a number of issues.

This isn’t the first time in recent memory that Democrats have had to pick between Williams and another candidate. In 2006, Wolf herself ran against Williams for the 2nd District seat - officially a nonpartisan office, though party lines usually dominate - in the primary election; she prevailed by nine percent, and then went on to defeat Dan Second, a Republican, in November. Since that last Democrat-splitting race, Wolf explained, “Das and I have worked well together and will continue to work well together.”

Though he welcomed Farr’s support, Williams, however, wasn’t happy about Wolf’s support of his new opponent. “I’m very disappointed given how closely we’ve worked on a number of issues,” said Williams, who also enjoys the support of 1st District Salud Carbajal and a majority of South Coast city councilmembers. Jordan, for her part, said she was “very deeply honored” by Wolf’s support.

Jordan, a longtime statewide environmental advocate, and her husband Nava opposed the controversial deal to allow offshore drilling at Tranquillon Ridge near Vandenberg Air Force base, even though many regional environmental groups and politicians - including Wolf and Williams - supported it. That did not upset Wolf’s support, though, as the supervisor explained she knew from the get-go where Jordan stood. “As a board member, I appreciated her position,” said Wolf, also noting Jordan’s work in the private sector, her strong environmental record, and her involvement in health care and women’s issues as reasons for the endorsement. “I happened to disagree with her. I wasn’t surprised when we continued to disagree. But that was only one issue.”

Williams, like Wolf, was very much in favor of the project. He has cited Jordan’s opposition to the Tranquillon Ridge project as one of his main reasons for running. (That defeated proposal is now back on the table thanks to a budget move by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. See independent.com/capitol-letters for more on that.)

Aside from the Tranquillon Ridge controversy, Farr said that Williams’ understanding of what matters most locally is what drew her support. “Growing up here and being involved, he understands and knows local issues,” Farr said, explaining that he was raised in Isla Vista, knows about the needs of the Santa Ynez Valley (also in Farr’s district), and has a working knowledge of many issues facing the region, such as water supplies. Williams worked hard on Farr’s behalf to get her elected in the fall, walking precincts in Isla Vista, a battleground for not only Farr’s race but many other fall races as well.

Das Williams should be voted OUT of office -- he is not the kind of person to handle California budget issues.
He loves to spend money even when there is no money to spend -- giving raises to city workers when we are in a recession and budget crisis.
    Kick him out not up!
Vote Das and all of his supports OUT.

We need Das in Sacramento. He understands this community and all the local issues better than Susan Jordan. We need someone that is not just an environmentalist, but has experience and a track record of results on education, renewable energy, water issues and public safety. Das fits the bill.
Also - last time i checked the city budget has been balanced every year that Das has been on the council.

    ISB2003,
Sounds like you consider over-hiring and over-paying city workers while increasing public fees and under investing in infrastructure, gangs, homelessness, and community services as "balance"
I consider this type of budgeting not only unbalanced but destructive. to the Santa Barbara. Moving Das the the state level will only add to the issue.

Das is EXACTLY the kind of person we need working for us in State Government. He's a rare balance of freshness and experience. Das has loads of thinking out of the box solutions to save tax dollars while helping the environment. And as far as keeping in touch with his constituents - I have no doubt that he will be extremely responsive. Das was born and raised here, he knows this community well and his community knows him well too.

sounds like a new brand of required experience---being "born and raised" here--wait, where is here? I seem to recall a multitude of origins for Das. Regardless---how does that possibly equate to what is needed in an effective, representative legislator? Das is being used and allowing himself to be used for reasons that have nothing to do with "out of the box solutions" and more to do with political vendettas.

I'm with loneranger. Das is EXACTLY the kind of legislator that has put California in the toilet.

Thank God for Supervisor Wolf. The smartest, most savvy Supervisor endorses the smartest, most experienced and most savvy Assembly candidate. Makes sense.

As for the others.....Since when is hanging around the neighborhood the qualification for holding state office?

As for Das, an endorsement from Salud is the kiss of death. Good luck Bro with that campaign for offshore oil drilling. Suppose you and Salud are working with Gov. Losererator right now to terminate the State Lands Commission? If only you can succeed at eliminating environmental laws and protections then Gov. Arnie will be free to impose offshore oil drilling on us without having to deal with those pesky environmental laws.

Susan Jordan is much more than "just an environmentalist." She had a long and successful business career before her involvement in state politics. As the former chair of the SB County planning commission, she's more than knowledgeable about regional issues.

She's also been a fighter for women's causes. Now her passion is the environment and she is without peer in this regard. She'll bring a depth of knowledge and experience as a researcher to Sacramento, along with the connections and ability to get things done.

Am I alone in thinking that we are lucky to have two qualified Democratic candidates and it would be great to send either of them to the statehouse? So much anger and the election is eons away.

We have a choice between someone who has had a career outside of politics, who has been on county and area boards, with work on health issues and much more, versus one whose career is in politics, the city council, and political organizing (the Ventura anti-Wal-mart campaign, working for H-B Jackson's campaigns.)

I don't know Susan Jordan but after 6 plus years of watching Williams (and voting for him), I do know he is self-referential (and self-reverential) - watch him, as chair, dominate the ordinance committee! - and seems to have a hard time working with those with whom he disagrees. I think he would be a very poor choice as a representative of Santa Barbarans in Sacramento.

Review his fierce opposition to the citizens' ballot initiative on SB city height limits and his (failed) efforts to get a competing city council ballot measure for how he operates!

Good for Janet Wolf for standing up independently, but no criticism for Farr for whom this support is probably payback for campaign help.

Over the past 6 years and probably longer, there is not a local democratic candidate for office that Das did not work to help elect or re-elect. This goes for Pedro Nava, Salud Carbajal, and Janet Wolf (after the primary), as well as Doreen Farr.

I'm sure Das would have worked on a Susan Jordan campaign, as well. He didn't because she's never run for public office before, as far as I know.

The implication made about Doreen Farr's support is quite unfair. Support for a candidate is a lot more complex than just boiling it down to campaign work.
