Week in Sports Update

Fans should arrive earlier than originally scheduled for several athletic events this week.

Tonight (Thu., Nov. 12) Dos Pueblos High will host Rim of the World in a CIF girls volleyball playoff match at 6 p.m., an hour earlier than usual, because of the distance the visitors have to travel. If DP’s Chargers are as dominating as they were in their sweep of San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, they will be sending the Rim team home around 7. Santa Barbara High also has a home volleyball match tonight against Anaheim Canyon.

The 50th annual “Big Game” between the football teams of Santa Barbara and San Marcos will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday at San Marcos. Carpinteria hosts Santa Clara tonight in the final weekend of prep football.

UCSB will take on UC Irvine for the championship of the Big West men’s soccer tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday at Harder Stadium. The time of the Gaucho men’s basketball season opener against Cal State Los Angeles has been moved up to 3 p.m.

The Gaucho soccer team advanced to the final by blanking Cal State Northridge 1-0 Wednesday night. Junior defender Michael Boxall scored the winning goal on a header in the 72nd minute. Luis Silva unleashed a wicked 25-yard shot that Northridge goalkeeper Michael Abalos did well to knock away, but the onrushing Boxall slammed the rebound sharply on one bounce into the back of the net. UCSB’s goalie, Sam Hayden, was credited with his 14th shutout, a school record.

UC Irvine earned a shot at the title by defeating Cal Poly 2-1 on a penalty kick in the second overtime period.

The NCAA women’s soccer tournament begins a day early today at Sanford, where UCSB faces BYU at 4:30 p.m., followed by top-seeded Stanford versus Northern Arizona. The winners will play Saturday. All other rounds will be Friday-Sunday; an exception was made for BYU, which avoids Sunday athletic events.
