TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 23-DECEMBER 6

A UCSB basketball team that is off to a hot start and a trio of volleyball teams that are hot on the finishing stretch will be in action early this week.

In college hoops, the Gaucho men will try to win their third straight game tonight (Mon., Nov. 23) against the San Francisco Dons at the Thunderdome.

On Tuesday night, women's volleyball fans have three matches to choose from. Dos Pueblos High (30-2), which swept five consecutive foes en route to the CIF Southern Section 1A championship, will host Los Alamitos in the first round of the State Regionals. The Chargers are seeded No. 1 and will have three straight home matches if they keep winning.

SBCC, the No. 3 seeded community college team in the Southern Cal Regionals, will face Fullerton at the Sports Pavilion. The Vaqueros (20-2) are co-champions of the Western State Conference North. They are 11-0 at home and would host a second-round match Saturday if they advance.

UCSB's spikers (21-7) have clinched second place in the Big West Conference and will conclude the regular season Tuesday at the Thunderdome against San Diego State. The Gauchos are 10-1 at home.

The Gaucho women's basketball team has the early-season chills scoring just 40 points in a loss to Loyola Marymount that dropped their record to 0-3. They will try to warm up in a pre-Thanksgiving match at noon Wednesday against Kentucky.

The NCAA men's soccer tournament reaches the Sweet 16 stage on Sunday (Nov. 29), and UCSB is still in the hunt. They Gauchos will visit UCLA at 5 p.m. in a rematch of the 2006 championship game, which UCSB won, 2-1.
