Law and Disorder 10-1

The trial of Los Angeles residents Claudia Cabrera and her husband, Josue Luna, is underway in Los Angeles for the hit-and-run death of 18-year-old Adrianna Bachan earlier this year. Bachan, a Santa Barbara native, was struck and killed on 3/29 by a vehicle allegedly driven by Cabrera, who authorities say ran a red light at an intersection near the USC campus where Bachan was attending school. Authorities allege that after the vehicle struck Bachan, Luna got out of the car and pushed a second person off the hood and onto the ground, and the vehicle drove off.

Joel Angeles, chief of staff for Assemblymember Audra Strickland, was found not guilty of misdemeanor battery charges for an incident that took place outside a Thousand Oaks fundraising event for Tony Strickland, who eventually won a State Senate seat in a hotly contested race with Hannah-Beth Jackson. Several event protesters claimed Angeles shoved them and even knocked one man to the ground. Angeles, who claimed he was the one who was shoved, expressed relief at the verdict.

Despite claims by Kim Klein, ex-wife of Michael Klein, that his reckless disregard caused the death of the couple’s teenage daughter in a plane crash in Panama that also killed Michael Klein and the pilot, a Santa Barbara jury decided on 9/9 that he was in fact not negligent in her death. At the time, Klein, who had earned hundreds of millions of dollars from selling various high-tech companies he created, was the CEO of Santa Barbara-based Pacificor LLC, and was on vacation with his daughter and her friend, who survived the crash last December. His former wife had sued his estate.

A 21-year-old Goleta resident apparently committed suicide by jumping off the Granada garage Sunday morning. The man jumped around 7 a.m. Sunday, and, according to Santa Barbara police, it appears the fall was intentional. A woman witnessed the man mid-fall off the Anapamu Street side of the structure.
