Defending Not De-Funding UCSB

KCSB Radio to Broadcast Live a Teach-In Focusing on Education Budget

Tri-Counties residents concerned about funding for UC Santa Barbara (and the K-12 system) can tune in to KCSB 91.9 FM this afternoon to hear panel discussions, interviews, and live news reports during a marathon event titled “Defending the University: A Teach-In on the Current Crisis.” Live audio stream available at kcsb.org.

Running from 2:30 p.m. to midnight at UCSB’s Campbell Hall, the event was organized by a coalition of faculty, students, and staff. Other participants include student groups, labor unions, academic centers, and departmental chairs from throughout the state of California. The impacts of de-funding for the University of California, the Cal State universities, the Community College system, and K-12 schools are the focus of discussion.

Among the keynote speakers are UC Berkeley professor George Lakoff, author of “Don’t Think of an Elephant,” and Stan Glantz, professor of medicine at UC San Francisco and past chair of the UC Committee on Planning and Budget, as well as State Senator Loni Hancock (D-Oakland), who is chair of the Elections, Reapportionment, and Constitutional Amendments Committee.

The statewide teach-in is a response to California’s economic crisis, which has severely impacted the quality of all levels of education. The teach-in evolved from concern about major student fee increases and employee layoffs and furloughs at UCSB and across the state.
