UCSB South Hall Cleared Because of Potential Threat

No Actual Threat, Authorities Determine

UCSB officials have sent out a campus-wide e-mail notifying people of a potential threat at South Hall. They are advising people to stay away from the building, which houses the mathematics department, as well as the English and writing departments.

Authorities are searching for someone possibly in possession of a gun, and are telling those in the building to shelter in place until evacuated.

One witness who had been in South Hall said a man had been on a sixth floor balcony of the building holding beer bottles and yelling at students below, but it is unclear whether his actions are related to the reports of a threat.

UPDATE: Authorities have determined there to be no actual threat, or weapon at UCSB’s South Hall. Business will continue as usual, according to an email sent out to the campus Monday at 4:20 p.m.

Authorities evacuated the building when they received a call of someone possibly in possession of a gun.

One witness who had been in South Hall told the Independent she saw a student apparently participating in a fraternity stunt on the sixth floor, surrounded by beer bottles and yelling at students below.
