On 9/1, the Goleta City Council unanimously approved a resolution rescinding last November’s 4-1 approval of a 140-room Marriott Residence Inn that was to be built at 6300 Hollister Avenue. Citing an alleged violation of the California Environmental Quality Act, attorneys representing environmental and Chumash interests had sued both Goleta and the project applicant, Irvine-based R.D. Olsen Development.

The Goleta City Council voted unanimously on 9/1 to approve a service contract with Goleta-based Bengal Engineering, Inc. to conduct a geotechnical engineering study linked to increasing the flow of San Jose Creek. A problem flood area, it has been called the key to Old Town revitalization by many city officials. City staff said that final design should be complete by February 2010, with a new bridge built on Hollister Avenue the next year.

The Goleta Partnership for Preparedness (GP4P) announced on 9/1 that it will be running “Goleta Prepare Now,” a program aimed at providing disaster preparedness education and resources to Goleta residents. A partnership between the City of Goleta, the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Red Cross, GP4P will hold an emergency backpack giveaway for low-income families, as well as provide disaster training.
