According to a 2009 study by the National Center for Disease Control, one in 110 children is diagnosed with autism. Overall, 1.5 million Americans are living with the effects of the disorder. As part of National Autism Awareness month, a day-long seminar is being held in the valley. Autism: Moving from Science and Research to Practice will teach parents, caregivers, teachers, pathologists, school district personnel, and health professionals to identify reliable scientific evidence regarding autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The seminar will also cover the new state legislation and the implications of the evidence-based practice movement. It takes place Thursday, April 15 (7:15-7:45am, breakfast and registration; 7:45am-5pm, program; 5-6:30pm, reception), at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott (555 McMurray Wy., Buellton) and costs $120 (limited number of family scholarships available). To register, call 895-4535 or visit innovative-learning.com/autism_conference.asp for details.

This will be a great venue for stakeholders in the Autism Community to get accurate information about the changes in our service delivery models here in California from funding to training requirements. There will be Spanish translators and support for families and professionals as well as a representative from the Clients Rights Advocacy available.

The autism epidemic is very important right now due to its increasing frequency. Having local resources for information on this spectrum disorder is great. Autism is still widely misunderstood- thank you for getting out information about it!

Epidemic, I don't think that word means what you think it means.
