TOP SPORTING EVENTS: AUGUST 4-10

Santa Barbara’s quest for a championship at the 76th National Baseball Congress World Series begins today (Wed. Aug. 4) at Wichita, Kansas. The Foresters are scheduled to swing into action against the Casa Grande (Ariz.) Cotton Kings at 8 p.m. Pacific time. Chris Joyce (5-0 record, 1.69 earned-run average), the pitcher of the year in the California Collegiate League, will start on the mound for the Foresters. The game will be broadcast on AM 1490 or the Internet (sbforesters.org).

So far, the NBC tournament has proceeded on schedule with 21 games in the first five days. There are six games on tap today at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, and the Foresters and Cotton Kings will be the last teams to play at 10 p.m. local time. In the past, weather delays have pushed games into the wee hours of the morning.

Win or lose, the Foresters will be slated to play again Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.
