Congress has the power to spend money in order to serve the “general welfare” of its citizens. Nowhere does the Constitution state Congress can require Americans to spend their own money on their own welfare, such as health insurance. This Democratic-controlled Congress has now crossed the legal line of power given it by the people. It should also be embarrassingly obvious that individual senators cut deals benefiting their own state constituents, that run counter to the general welfare of all Americans, only to end debate and pass legislation. Does Congress want to label this action “cash for clunkers” too? There are many other problems with the healthcare bill that this majority party seems to want to shove down our throats. I thought there was to be a “change” in politics as usual. Well, maybe it is, but it is for the worse. We need a new breed in Washington and in our own state of California as well. Where will new leadership come from?—John Burk, S.B.
