An on-duty Santa Barbara police officer was taken to Cottage Hospital in stable condition on 1/12 after he was hit on his department motorcycle by a vehicle that made an alleged right-of-way violation. The incident occurred on Salinas Street near Salinas Place, according to a Police Department spokesperson. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, and investigators were looking into the collision for much of the afternoon.

The parents of former USC baseball player Taylor Grigsby won’t be able to seek damages for infliction of emotional distress in connection with their son’s injury during a baseball game at UCSB. The parents — whose son collided with a large wooden plank on the field of play and hurt his knee — did not experience the requisite “contemporaneous sensory awareness of the casual connection between the negligent conduct and the resulting injury,” argued attorneys for the UC Board of Regents, and Judge Thomas Anderle agreed. In other words, they did not realize what had actually occurred at the time. The case is set to go to trial on other claims in April.

Sheriff Bill Brown is the defendant in a recently filed lawsuit by several bail bond agents, who, among other things, claim that the phone system in Santa Barbara County Jail has given several arrestees difficulties in making phone calls to get bailed out of jail, by either disconnecting the calls when answered, blocking the numbers, or turning off. Bondsman David Corlatan, who filed the lawsuit along with several of his clients, said the inability for him to receive phone calls has led to a decline in his business.
