A former youth athletics coach, 43-year-old Andrew Greenaway, in Vandenberg Village was arrested for allegedly molesting one of his players almost 20 years ago. According to the Sheriff’s Department, detectives became aware of a possible 1991 crime when Greenaway allegedly asked the parents of one of his players to join teammates for an overnight trip to Disneyland. On the trip, Greenaway allegedly molested the 13-year-old. He is in jail on $1 million bond for alleged molestation and kidnapping with the intent to molest.

The arraignment for Dana Larsen and Craig Ilenstine, two men alleged to have started last May’s Jesusita Fire, was continued until February because of the voluminous paperwork generated by the investigation. They face two misdemeanor charges, one for using power tools without having a hot work permit and the other for not having proper firefighting equipment. Lawyers for the defendants, who were apparently doing brushwork, contend the two men were not in the area of the fire when it started, and had left at least an hour earlier.

Public defender Karen Atkins, who most recently represented 14-year-old Ricardo Juarez in a high-profile murder trial, is retiring after 31 years with the Public Defender’s Office. She twice was honored with the office’s Attorney of the Year award, and was one of the first, if not the first, women to work there. The county lauded her for “zealous advocacy” and for often taking the most difficult cases to come to the office, which is charged with guaranteeing people’s right to a defense attorney.
