What: Classic California tavern cuisine in its just-off-State Street digs, conveniently located for pre-theatre bites.

How Much: Starters $8-$12, entrees $14-$26.

The Dish: Casual and inviting, this new dinner and drinks spot (opened in March 2010) serves an array of classic California tavern cuisine with something for everyone. The eatery replaces Epiphany and is run by Alberto and Michelle Mastrangelo. To start, snack and share a variety of small plates, such as crispy calamari or truffle mac ’n’ cheese or have a salad on the lighter side. The menu category “Burgers and Then Some” includes sliders, grilled cheese, and fish tacos doused in dynamite sauce. Entrées are described as “Traditional Plates”—think salmon, roasted chicken, chicken and spinach crepes, and pork baby back ribs. “Guilty Pleasures” (denoted on the menu as “oh yes you should”) range from a vanilla malt milkshake to Boston crème pie, the house favorite. Open daily for dinner with a late-night menu served until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, Hob Nob is a vibrant spot for gathering.
