TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JULY 27-AUGUST 1

The Santa Barbara Foresters could clinch their eighth consecutive California Collegiate League baseball title today (Wed., July 28) when they host the Conejo Oaks at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Game time is 5 p.m.

After a posting a 4-3 victory over the Oaks on Tuesday night at Cal Lutheran’s Sparky Anderson Field, the Foresters (24-7 in the CCL, 35-9 overall) reduced their magic number to one over the second-place San Luis Obispo Blues (21-12 in the CCL). Santa Barbara has five regular-season games remaining, three of them on the road. The last home game will be Saturday against the Santa Maria Packers.

Regardless of the outcome of the league race, the Foresters will be traveling to Wichita, Kansas, next week to make their 17th straight appearance in the National Baseball Congress World Series. They won the title in 2006 and 2008.

While the local baseball club may be celebrating a pennant, UCSB will celebrate a groundbreaking on Friday. A 2 p.m. ceremony will inaugurate the construction Curtice Gate at Harder Stadium, home of the Gaucho soccer teams. The gate at the southeast corner will serve as an entry way to the stadium, which will be the site of the 2010 College Cup, the NCAA men’s soccer championship, on December 10-12.

The gate is named in honor of Jack Curtice, the former Gaucho football coach who was instrumental in the building of the stadium in 1966. The stadium itself carries the name of Theodore “Spud” Harder, a pre-war football coach and longtime administrator at the university. Inside the stadium is Meredith Field, named after a family that supports the nationally ranked Gaucho soccer program. The public is invited to Friday’s ceremony.
