Cuban Aid Caravan to Roll Through S.B.

Demonstrators Hope to Pick Up Supply Donations

Santa Barbara’s Trinity Episcopal Church will welcome the 21st Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba on July 10, an aid convoy that is winding its way around the U.S. and Canada before departing for Cuban shores later that month.

In anticipation of the caravan’s arrival, Trinity Church will be accepting donations of equipment, including computers, books, and Spanish-language Bibles, through July 3, according to a press release from the church.

In addition, the press release said the church is soliciting volunteers to host the caravan members during their stay in town.

Organized by the humanitarian aid group Pastors for Peace, the convoy travels every summer to Cuba to deliver aid and protest against the decades-long economic blockade of the island, according to the Pastors for Peace Web site.

After the convoy finishes touring the U.S., the participants will cross into Mexico from Texas, before loading the collected aid onto a ship at the Mexican port of Tampico and heading to Cuba, according to the Web site.
