A new recreational opportunity will soon be available at Cachuma Lake. The County of Santa Barbara announces the latest in new recreational opportunities at Cachuma Lake. Recent rule changes at Lake Cachuma will now allow the use of Kayaks and Canoes for the first time. The new uses at the lake were considered to be compatible with current lake activities and an opportunity to expand the recreational experience at Lake Cachuma. The new rules that will allow Canoes and Kayaks were approved by the Board on March 15 th and will become effective on April 15, 2011. Lakes surrounding Cachuma already offer Kayaking and Canoeing including; Lake Casitas, Lake Lopez, Lake Nacimiento, Lake Piru, and Santa Margarita Lake. Cachuma will be one of the only public freshwater Kayaking and Canoeing opportunities in Santa Barbara County. Santa Barbara County Supervisor Farr commented “Adding the use of Kayaks and Canoes at Cachuma Lake is long overdue and will provide a wonderful opportunity for kids, fishermen, and nature enthusiasts alike.” She further added “It is a great way to enjoy what Cachuma Lake has to offer and to see the lake from a different perspective.” Supervisor Farr will hold a short press conference at Cachuma Lake at 10:00 a.m. on April 15, 2011 to mark the first day on the lake for Canoes and Kayaks followed by the official launching of the first Kayaks and Canoes at Cachuma Lake. Canoes and Kayaks must pass an inspection for Quagga Mussel and other aquatic nuisance species prior to launch. The fee for launching Canoes and Kayaks is $5 and annual passes are also available. The Public is reminded that Cachuma Lake is still a non body contact lake and swimming from Boat, Shore, or Kayak/Canoe is still prohibited.
