Collaboration albums are a tricky beast. And more often than not, they don’t end up totaling the sum of their parts. Thao & Mirah is not like most collaboration albums. Born in the city of San Fran, the record is brimming with punchy folk ballads reminiscent of Mirah’s solo career and rollicking rock jams that are straight out of Thao with The Get Down Stay Down’s back catalogue. And with tUnE-yArDs mastermind Merrill Garbus manning the mixboards, there’s plenty of quirk to boot. “Little Cup” sounds like Joanna Newsom, chock-full of distant vocals and clangy percussion, while “Teeth” is pure, sultry Thao, brooding and empowering all at once. It seems these two have found their match in each other, and we only hope that means more Thao & Mirah records in the future. Thao & Mirah play SOhO on Monday, May 2. Visit clubmercy.com for info.
