It joins nearly 10,000 police jurisdictions nationwide in a summer mobilization tagged “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Twice as many DUI crashes take place on the weekend and four times as many at night,” said Sheriff’s Senior Deputy Jeff Farmer, who coordinates the effort. “That’s why we’ve clustered our enforcement during these times.”

Saturation patrols are set for Carpinteria, Buellton, Goleta, Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and UCSB. Sheriff’s deputies will be on the lookout for people with DUI warrants.

Police in Santa Barbara and in Santa Maria will run sobriety checkpoints on Friday, Aug. 26.

Lompoc police plan four checkpoints, Aug. 19, 20, 29 and 31. An Avoid the 12 multi-jurisdictional checkpoint is set for that Saturday with another Santa Barbara checkpoint on Sunday. SBPD will field two others on Labor Day weekend.

Avoid the 12 gets its funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety through NHTSA. OTS requests that people who see dangerous drivers on the road report them by dialing 911 on their cell phones
