Ryan Makowski
Santa Barbara Sheriff's detectives arrested 22-year-old Ryan Makowski for allegedly having sex with a teenager he met while working at Santa Ynez High School as an assistant volleyball coach. The two reportedly met last spring. According to Sheriff's Department spokesperson Drew Sugars, Makowski was booked into Lompoc Jail on Tuesday, August 23, and is being held on $100,000 bail. Due to the victim's age, no other information will be released about the case, said Sugars.

22 year old has sex with teenager. That teen could be 19 yrs old. Now the guy will be called a sex offender. This is where the tough child protection laws get a bit vague. I'm glad Hank is only blogging from a sofa and isn't judge, jury and executioner!

While most of the freshman were 18 to 19 years old when I was in college, there were a few 17 year olds in the dorms. I guess it would have been illegal for us all to have an orgy.
Ethically, I suspect most folks would be more upset about the coach/player relationship.

A couple things: For starters, I'm his brother. There are several things this article fails to mention.
One - He wasn't coaching for the high school when all of this occurred. He's been unemployed for quite a few months.
Two - When he was coaching, she was not one of the players being coached by him.
Three - Hank, you're sick. Get help.

Thank you for the additional info. I for one will withhold judgment since all details are not available. A 22 yo having consensual sex with a 17 or 18 yo may be illegal but is probably very common and Is this case initiated by the girl or her parents?

For the not-particularly-bright: If her name cannot be released and was not printed, then she is obviously UNDER 18. Duh.

Well, 1st off, that comment was NOT made by me. Somebody saw my Indy page open & decided to "speak for me" in a joking manner, which this clearly ain't (a joking matter). The "hacking" matter has been resolved & an apology has been given.
So here's the REAL hank speaking. So this guy had sex w/ a teenager. Was said teenager of age of consent? Who initiated the contact? Get used to it, as these are questions that the trial will bring up. There are NO details available on this matter & when they do arise, comments will be made.
But until then, I can say from my 24 year residency in Isla Vista that a lot of consenting sexual contact does occur between people in their late teens & older. It is a fact of life.
W/ that said, if this goes to trial expect some answers & a judgement.
