Week in Sports

Westmont College and UCSB will show their prowess in women’s basketball, both schools hosting games on Saturday, December 10.

Westmont has achieved a No. 6 ranking on the NAIA Division 1 coaches’ poll — the highest ever for the Warriors. Their previous high was No. 10 during the 2009-10 season. They have a 9-1 overall record, including 2-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, which they started off with a 68-64 victory over No. 3 Azusa Pacific, the defending national champion.

Westmont will face California Lutheran (2-3) in a non-league game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Murchison Gym.

UCSB (3-4) is not ranked on any polls, but the Gaucho women have earned a statistical distinction. Their defense ranks 19th in NCAA Division 1 in the fewest points allowed per game (51.0). Their last four opponents have failed to reach 50 points. They defeated the University of San Francisco 60-41 in their last outing.

UNLV will bring a 7-2 record into the Thunderdome for a 4 p.m. game against the Gauchos.

In men’s basketball, the 39th annual SBCC Classic starts Thursday with four games at the Sports Pavilion. The host Vaqueros (1-8) face Cypress at 7 p.m.

UCSB’s men played all their November games at home and went 4-2 — the losses to San Diego State and UNLV both coming in overtime — and during December, every Gaucho game will be on the road. The journey starts Tuesday, December 13, at the University of San Diego, followed by Washington (Dec. 16), California (Dec. 19), and BYU (Dec. 22).

Westmont’s men will host the 36th annual Tom Byron Classic December 29-30.
