I own Brisa Marina taxi in Santa Barbara. Chief Cam Sanchez’s police officers apparently have been directed to issue unwarranted citations, without cause, to cabbies solely for the purpose of generating revenue for the police department and the City of Santa Barbara. I received a citation for “impeding the flow of traffic” when clearly I was not impeding any traffic, as you can see in photos of the crime scene.

This is contrary to the testimony of the citing officer, who claimed that cars were having to drive over the center double-yellow line to get by me, even though the street at that location is five car-widths wide. A lot of the cabbies have received a barrage of tickets similar or identical to this citation, which amounts to nothing less than corruption on part of the SBPD.

In some instances, taxi drivers have received impeding tickets for someone jumping into their cab while they are stopped at red lights or stop signs, or while they are yielding for pedestrians, without holding any cars up in traffic.

Furthermore, the City of Santa Barbara has failed to provide taxi stands where needed ( in front of Sharkeez, for example. You’ll also notice that 95% of all taxi stands have time limits making it impossible to pick up drunks without risking getting cited before 9 pm. An obvious scam to generate income from some of the poorest working people in the city, leaving lots of us homeless or unable to provide for our families and children.

Independent Discussion Guidelines

The last I heard, you're not supposed to park in a red zone at all, irrespective of whether you are impeding traffic or not. When I was in college, I used to drive for Yellow Cab, and I know that cabbies take a lot of liberties with the law. You're in a red zone. You should be cited.

You're not supposed to park in front of fire hydrants! Or in the red! And yes taxis often impede traffic and when they aren't impeding traffic many of them are menaces on the road: excessive speeding, cutting people off.

Well, your half way there in defending yourself from, "Impeding Traffic" citations but be forewarned, you have clearly shown the violation of parking or standing in front of a Fire Hydrant and if where you were parked / standing in the red zone before the citation was issued, then the department will have an additional issue with that too. Take care when incriminating yourself in your photographs over issues of law breaking.
Now if you were stopped in the shot, that's another story but if the citations are frivolous, file a complaint at the department, the City Council and or with the County / State, and so too, keep a copy of your records and remind the citing officer next time that you filed and will be adding the next citation to your complaint.
Realize though, that as the issue of citations are to garner income for the CIty, County, and State, your still barking up the wrong tree (LOL).

Only dogs are allowed to park in front of fire hydrants.

Guess we'll have to cite the hundreds of other drivers for impeding while temporarily stopped in front of the fire hydrant, too since that's how many cars stop there while waiting for the light to turn green, heh ? What does that have anything to do with time limits in Taxi zones or the City failing to provide sensible Taxi stands ( in front of Sharkeez / Eos, for example ) in order to serve the public ? Nice try .

Ps - this is not an issue of fire hydrants while pulling forward in your Taxi . This is an issue about the Officer lying under oath & issuing an unwarranted citation for doing something that never happened . This is also an example of cabbies having no sensible places to park done intentionally by the City for generating money from some of the poorest working people in, Santa Barbara . Issuing a fire hydrant ticket or red zone violation is another example of how the City is extorting money from cabbies .

I think they want to eliminate taxis in the city of Santa Barbara so they will have a greater opportunity to pummel more drunk driving suspects. ;)

Being stopped at a light and actually parking are to very different things. If a driver doesn't know the difference they don't need to be on the road.

Exactly right ,. This is another reason they do not provide adequete & suffcient parking for cabs in places where Taxis are needed & that's where Eos, Sharkeez & other establishments that serve alcoholic beverages are located . They make lots of money off of DUI'S . Just check out the tow trucks anxiously waiting for their next DUI bust while parked on, Cota Street
( parked illegally in Taxi stands by the way & the tow truck drivers will never get cited ) Friday & Saturday night . This is not about safety, it's all about money . $$$$$$$$ .

You'd think the police were forcing people to drive drunk at gun point based on some of these comments. Instead of ice cream cones cops now buy kids shots I guess...

As I said before; I drove a cab in Santa Barbara when I was in college, and never had a problem with the police. Most of the owner/operator cabbies, especially at the Greyhound stand, were very aggressive. They didn't seem to possess the ability to blend in normal society. They also drove very aggressively too. Some would drink. One cabby I used to work with was so drunk, that he entered the freeway going the wrong way, and killed a woman that worked at UCSB. Stop complaining, and abide by the law.

This letter and accompanying illustrations are great publicity for Briso Marina Taxi! Not. I certainly don't feel safe if this is the attitude behind the wheel.

This story has been done in depth by the Independent more than three years ago.

Besides taxi patrons too drunk or dumb to walk around the corner to a legal taxi parking zone, another root of the problem is that the city has issued way too many taxi licenses and thus saturated the market with ever increasingly more taxi operators desperate to grab a fast fare before a competitor does.

And guess which city department is in charge of that. Yep, that one again!

Interesting Tough-on-Taxis comment from Jerry Droz. (Dec. 18, 2011) Will the police force selectively prosecute Brisa Marina now that Mr. Droz has opinionated that Chief Sanchez is corrupt?
Dear Mayor, Why has Cam not been canned? If he had been offered that pay raise from the other town he solicited on our taxpayers' dimes, he would have deserted us! By the way, who ordered the shredding of those police documents in the Lance DUI case that the Honorable Judge Hill dismissed? (Now the evidential facts will never be exposed in open court because the case is summarily closed.) Oh, and how did that drunk driver, DeNununzio get those bloody bruises during the time that the Chief's men were on him? Looks to me like the officer did little speaking and lots of bullying. What's up with grabbing the man's arm so soon ? Pretty docile drunk if you ask me. (Clever of the DA to avoid legal fees paid by the taxpayers to defend an abusive cop, which might make Cam look bad.)
It seems to me that when a Taxi stops to serve a pedestrian, the flow of traffic is improved (ie. another drunk out of the way.) but hey, what do I know, the alcohol business pays big taxes to the city and apparently so do the cabbies; via bogus citation fees. My observation is that squad cars usually cause the traffic backup; no doubt it's an illegally parked car of another boy in blue using proper force on a spent-out drunk) Dear Mayor, please publish the total revenues coerced from the poorest working people in the city.
Next time I need a cab, I'm looking for Jerry; if I can see him through my beer glasses. He needs my money to pay his share of city taxes: oh, I mean tickets. Santa Barbara Citizen.

Just for the record, John Adams ( don't know if that's his real name ) or owner of, Door to Door Taxi made that comment
about, Denun unzio getting bruises, etc. and That Mr. Droz had absolutely nothing to do with these comments .

How can, jerry be impeding the flow of traffic, when the Street is seven cars wide, Officer Volok ? Ten out of ten people would not say that was impeding, Sir .

I can only guess you're seeing double if you think State St. at that intersection is seven car lengths. And it's a bit disingenuous to even use the width of the street when it is the width and number of the lanes that is important. Would you suggest people drive into oncoming traffic lanes while you're parked in the street?
I sure hope you're not behind the wheel.

But you're right about one thing redants, there are A LOT of drivers in this town who are damn lucky I'm not a traffic cop. They'd be pedestrians not drivers.

It's the comment from, Santa Barbara ( anonymous profile )
that I was referring to that the owner of, Door to Door Taxi
made and this was positively not from, Jerry . It's confusing because of the way the comments are laid out with the little arrow pointed toward the commenter . Jerry actually knows the Police are doing a terrific job for, Santa Barbara . If you ever need them they are there . Efficient, intelligent and very Professional . As evidenced by our low crime rate the Police are doing a good and outstanding job . May God bless them .
