Highway 101 near the Milpas Street overpass was momentarily closed in both directions at around 3:10 p.m. this afternoon as police and CHP officers responded to a suicidal person on the overpass. Details of the incident are scarce, but based on scanner chatter it appears the person was saved. Traffic is now flowing but moving slowly.

No, because it is faster and easier to get to. There are always patrol cars not too far from any city structure. Think!

tabatha... how brilliant.
..and completely wrong.
The reason there is not suicide barrier is because there is NO SIDEWALK... this is on the freeway - people are not supposed to be up there at all, that's the difference.

Good point - but how long does it take to get from Berkholm's donuts in Solvang (where Search and Rescue went to find a sheriff when I was a member, much quicker than calling SBCS dispatch) to the bridge, anyway? Or does it depend on the # of donuts onboard?

I hope this person can get the help they need and it's great that CHP was able to save them.
There were comments concerning the suicide barrier that said that intervention in a first suicide attempt can prevent someone from getting to the same level of desperation in the future.
I think suicide barriers are ridiculous, and also that the cost of the San Marcos Pass Bridge barrier will result in much greater loss of life by diverting money from other programs. For example, we've cut funding for in-home services for the elderly and disabled, which will force people out of their homes and into institutions (incredible cruelty), and we don't pay their caregivers enough to live on. The average lifespan of a disabled person living at home with help is 15 years following a physical disability, and 18 months in a nursing home.
If I wanted to kill myself, I could step in front of one of the many cars doing 40-50 mph on my street (that ends at the ocean in less than a block) in my residential neighborhood. It would take 5 seconds if I started from my current location at my computer

14noscams, please provide your address to Caltrans so they can build a big fence around your house.
