Curb Extensions Whacko

The letter praising bulb-outs in this week’s Independent was so totally predictable, since it came from a group of architects. Of course, the writer was careful not to use the term bulb-out, but instead judiciously called them “curb extensions.”

I have noticed that the only letters I see in favor of these bizarre inventions come from those in the construction and building trades. Is it money I smell?

Every letter from an average John Doe is totally against such witless additions and with very good reason. All the average citizen has to do, in order to make up their minds, is to watch a large truck or Metropolitan Transit District bus try to get around one of the whacko “curb extensions.” Talk about your traffic hazards! And that is just one of the problems with them!

The average, tax-paying citizens at the meeting, whether they were allowed to speak or not, were vehemently against any further, unneeded obstructions to the safe flow of traffic, on Chapala or any other street. Plus the fact that the city is totally out of money to spend on such foolishness.

For the city to ignore these facts would certainly bear out the old axiom that “Common sense is anything but common.”
