TOP SPORTING EVENTS: FEBRUARY 4-14

UCSB is not enjoying any comfort at home in Big West men’s basketball. The Gauchos lost for the third time in five conference games on their own floor Thursday night. Pacific rode a torrid first half (10 for 15 from three-point range) to a 74-68 victory at the Thunderdome. The Gauchos are now 2-3 at home and 4-5 overall in the league. The defending champions will try to get back to .500 on Saturday night when they host UC Davis in a game to be televised by Fox Sports Prime.

The Gaucho women won at Pacific, 69-62, as junior guard Emily Johnson scored a career-high 31 points. Westmont College’s women, playing at home, upset the NAIA’s No. 3 team, California Baptist, 83-71. The Warrior men also won, 77-72.

In high school basketball tonight (Fri., Feb. 4), Bishop Diego takes a five-game winning streak into Carpinteria’s gym; San Marcos hosts Buena in a showdown for second place in the Channel League; and Dos Pueblos visits Santa Barbara.

San Marcos is inducting seven new members into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday. They are Stefanie Christoferson (1997), Alan Everest (1968), Anthony Hunter (1981), John Pate (1977), Satini Puailoa (1974), Walt Rehm (1966) and Mark Warkentin (1998). Everest will not be able to attend the induction dinner at the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. He is the special teams coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers and will be tied up in the Super Bowl. For information on the dinner, which will benefit The Field of Champions, e-mail Christi Phreaner at phreaner3@cox.net.
