Capps Statement on the Resignation of Egypt’s President Mubarak

Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif) issued the following statement in response to the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

“I congratulate the people of Egypt for bringing about transformational change in their country. It has been inspiring them pursue this path peacefully and resolutely. As an American, I can’t help but be inspired by the ability of ordinary citizens, especially the young people of Egypt, come together with a common purpose to reshape the future of their nation. As someone who has worked with emerging democracies around the globe as part of the House Democracy Partnership, I hope that our country can offer all the appropriate help the Egyptians will need to fully realize their efforts. The Egyptian people took the first difficult steps to take control of their country today, but this is only the beginning of their new future. A great deal of work remains to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition to a truly democratic system of government. I hope that in the weeks and months ahead, Egyptians can form a government that protects fundamental human rights that all men and women deserve,” said Capps.
