A Deeper Shade of Blue

Directed by Jack McCoy | AUSTRALIA | 2010 | 96min | (Q&A) DOCUMENTARY WORLD PREMIERE A DEEPER SHADE OF BLUE is a wide-angle overview of the history of surfing with close-ups of the best historical and contemporary surfers. It is not so much a surf movie as a film about surfing’s deepest roots in the subconscious, in ancient lore, and in man’s perpetual quest for a joyful relationship with the natural world. With eleven interwoven chapters, master filmmaker Jack McCoy finds connections between today’s leading surfers and those who came before. The film inspires an appreciation of what it means to be a surfer and of the soulful underlying power of today’s surf culture. This is a big picture of a memorable story, beautifully told. The story is captivating, but the film would be worth watching for the amazing surf footage alone. - Adapted from A Deeper Shade of Blue Website

Destination 3 (Degrees)

Directed by Chris Aguilar | USA | 2010 | 60min | (Q&A) DOCUMENTARY Watch Movie Trailer Three degrees of latitude separate the islands of Hawaii. Nine legendary and infamous open ocean channels link them together. In April of 2010, Morgan Hoesterey came up with an idea—to stand up paddle across the Hawaiian Island chain as a way to raise awareness about plastics and their effects on the ocean. A seasoned stand up paddler (the first woman to stand up paddle across the Molokai Channel), she understood the challenge of this expedition. She recruited fellow distance racer, Jenny Kalmbach, to join her. They, along with a small crew, pushed themselves mentally and physically across some of the most dangerous waters in the world, culminating in the daring 82-mile, nighttime crossing from Oahu to Kauai. DESTINATION 3° is the story of two women striking out across three degrees of oceanic latitude into some of the most dangerous open ocean waters in the world. - Russ Spencer

Downhill: The Bill Johnson Story

Directed by Zeke Piestrup | USA | 2010 | 76min | (Q&A) DOCUMENTARY WORLD PREMIERE http://downhillbill.com/ An emotionally riveting documentary, DOWNHILL explores the life of skiing’s greatest rebel and cult hero, Bill Johnson. Johnson’s legend was born when he made his Ali-like prediction that “everyone else is racing for second place” at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics. Dubbed a “nose picker” by Austrian downhill great Franz Klammer, Johnson made good on his prediction, becoming the first American man to win a gold medal in downhill skiing at the Winter Olympics. Two more World Cup downhill victories followed shortly after the Olympics, and Johnson had climbed the mountain: he was the greatest downhiller in the world. “And then it was gone,” says ski legend Phil Mahre of Johnson’s subsequent fall from grace. The documentary depicts this journey and tells a personal tale of a fallen hero, seeking to win back his family and his life. - Russ Spencer

Stoked & Broke

Directed by Cyrus Sutton | USA | 2010 | 56min DOCUMENTARY A staycation surfari on zero dollars. Two good-natured surfers make their own boards, bamboo rickshaws, solar cookers, and hobo stoves as they set off on a 30-mile, eight-day walk through San Diego, California. Consulting bums, panhandling, selling sage, and collecting cans, the friends attempt to reduce surfing—and life—back to its primordial roots. But what begins as a guide to taking a minimalist surfing journey quickly becomes an examination of the relationship between freedom and alienation. The friends begin to realize how much of their lives and their own contentment is defined and dictated by marketing and culture. As they turn to the ocean for relief and solace, they still aren’t completely fulfilled. The ultimate lesson of their journey is that in the end, it isn’t a great wave that provides salve for the soul, but good old-fashioned human relationships. - Russ Spencer

The Still Point

Directed by Taki Bibelas | FRANCE | 2011 | 61min | (Q&A) DOCUMENTARY WORLD PREMIERE Watch Movie Trailer If Terrence Malick and the Dalai Lama ever got together to make a surf film, this would be it. A T.S. Eliot poem creates the debarkation point for this documentary about water and the ocean, as told by some of the world’s most legendary pioneer surfers. The emphasis of the film’s cinematography and interviews is to find the still place where true presence and peace can be achieved. Often, when surfers are riding a wave, they reach this state naturally and discover a place of connection not only with their inner life, but with all of life around them. What are the ramifications of this? And how can people reach this state more often in their daily lives, even when not surfing? THE STILL POINT is a unique new film from Canada, interesting to surfers and to all those who strive for a deeper connection to their lives and the world around them. - Russ Spencer

Directed by Josh Pomer | SOUTH AFRICA / USA | 2009 | 93min | (Q&A) DOCUMENTARY This gritty documentary follows the rise and fall of The Westsiders surf tribe through the eyes of three best friends from the original “Surf City”: Santa Cruz, California. Best friends Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins bonded through common tragedy and their love of surfing. They lived through shattered homes, drug addiction, other psychological issues and hard-core localism to achieve their dream of becoming professional surfers before the age of 24. In order to achieve their dream, they needed to surf the notorious Steamer Lane, and as a result were forced to join ‘”The Westsiders’ Surf Gang” and go face-to-face with Vince Collier, aka “The Godfather of The Westside.” Vince, a massive brute force, ran Steamer Lane with his own version of street justice. The film explores the price that the surf community of Santa Cruz paid for Collier’s presence, providing larger lessons about masculinity, violence, greed, and power. - Russ Spencer
