TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JANUARY 7-17

UCSB will face UCLA at 7:30 p.m. today (Fri., Jan. 7) in the semifinals of the 47th annual Gaucho Invitational men’s volleyball tournament at Robertson Gymnasium. In first-round matches this morning, the Gauchos swept Cal State Northridge (25-16, 25-21, 25-17), while UCLA went four games to knock off UC San Diego (25-22, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15).

BYU will meet Long Beach State in the other semifinal at the Thunderdome. All of Saturday’s matches will take place at Robertson Gym, culminating in the championship at 6:30 p.m.

In college basketball, UCSB will host Pacific in a Big West women’s game at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Gauchos will try to bounce back from a 63-55 loss Thursday night to preseason favorite UC Davis. The Gaucho men will seek their second straight road victory at Pacific on Saturday night after defeating Davis 77-65.
