The Bowl’s Jerry Garcia Glen was named by Scott Brittingham in honor of one of his idols, Grateful Dead’s lead guitarist Jerry Garcia. As part of a considerable contribution, Brittingham stipulated that the plan include a memorial sculpture. Brittingham himself came up with the idea of displaying Jerry’s hand, which had been injured in an accident when Garcia was young.

Paul Dore called Brittingham recently to report on the reception of his gift, saying that “the other night, as everyone was leaving a show, I noticed a group of people had stopped to make sure that they saw it. It was an act of homage, and the hand has taken on a life of its own.”
