TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JULY 29-AUGUST 7

One of the closest pennant races in the history of the California Collegiate League has come down the final homestand of the Santa Barbara Foresters. They host Team Vegas in a three-game series at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium starting today (Fri., July 29).

The San Luis Obispo Blues (24-12) wrapped up their league schedule with an 11-2 victory over Orange County on Thursday night. The Foresters (23-10) kept pace with a 12-3 rout of the Academy Barons in Compton, and now they control their own destiny. They need one victory to clinch a tie for first place. With two wins, they would celebrate their ninth consecutive title outright.

Friday’s and Saturday’s games start at 5 p.m. The regular season finale Sunday is at 1 p.m. Following that game, the Foresters will board their bus and head off to Wichita, Kansas, for the 77th annual National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series. They will face the Hutchinson (Kan.) Monarchs in their opening game Wednesday.

At the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, the second of four high-goal championships (the Piaget Silver Cup) will be decided Sunday at 1 p.m.

Goleta Beach will be a beehive of activity early Sunday morning during the first Goleta Beach Triathlon and Duathlon.

The Old Spanish Days Fiesta next week brings two competitions to Earl Warren Showgrounds, professional bull riding and a three-day rodeo.
