TOP SPORTING EVENTS: MARCH 7-14

Santa Barbara High’s boys soccer team has a chance to bounce back quickly from its defeat in the CIF Southern Section final. The Dons, who lost to San Clemente 2-1 on Saturday night, will host Canoga Park at 4 p.m. today (Monday, Mar. 7) in the State Regional quarterfinals at Peabody Stadium. Santa Barbara (19-6-3) is seeded third in the eight-team bracket, and Canoga Park (15-9-6) is seeded sixth.

Carpinteria and Bishop Diego also were runners-up in sectional playoffs but were selected to play in state competition on Tuesday – Carpinteria in Division 3 boys soccer (at Mendota) and Bishop Diego in Division 5 boys basketball (at Fresno Christian).

UCSB will host Pacific in the quarterfinals of the Big West Women’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at the Thunderdome. The Gauchos earned a share of the regular-season championship by defeating Cal Poly 78-64 in San Luis Obispo on Saturday. A phenomenal effort by senior center Mekia Valentine (27 points, 20 rebounds, 5 blocked shots) powered the Gauchos.

The Gaucho men tied for fourth place with Pacific and will square off against the Tigers at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the conference tournament at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The semifinals for both men’s and women’s teams will follow Friday.
