On Sunday, May 8, the grounds of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (3300 Via Real, Carpinteria) will be alive with thundering hooves and flying turf as the 2011 polo season opens. Founded in 1911, the S.B. Polo Club is the third oldest United States Polo Association. Later in the season, the club will host the Bombardier Pacific Coast Open, as well as the United States Polo Association Lucchese America Cup and the Robert Skene Trophy. Sunday matches are open to the public ($10) and matches begin at 1 and 3 p.m., with halftime divot stomps. To rent field-side cabanas, call Ellen Reid at 684-6683 or email ellen@sbpolo.com.
