The Santa Barbara County Flood Control District, in coordination with the City of Santa Barbara, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is pleased to announce that during the next six months, Lash Construction will be constructing the Lower Mission Creek Reach 1A, Phase 1 improvements.

Construction will begin in late May and will take approximately 6 months. Working hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. The project will require intermittent lane closures and traffic delays up to 10 minutes can be anticipated in the area of State Street and Cabrillo Blvd. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are urged to use caution and watch for traffic controls.

“County and City Public Works staff turned over every stone and determined a creative solution to acquire funding for this project. With a lack of federal funding, this project would not have begun for sometime without the funds provided through the Proposition 50 collaboration.” said Scott McGolpin, Director of the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department. “It is really a tremendous success story and one we plan on continuing until federal dollars are made available to complete this much needed project for the community.”

This project will consist of widening a portion of Mission Creek from the State Street bridge upstream to midway between State Street and Mason Street to improve flood conveyance capacity by constructing a new wall system on both sides of the channel. Reach 1A, Phase 1 is part of the overall Lower Mission Creek Flood Control and Restoration Project that is proposed for lower 1.3 miles of Mission Creek, from State Street to Canon Perdido Street.
