TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 8-22

The CIF girls volleyball playoffs begin tonight (Tue., Nov. 8) with Santa Barbara High (Division 1AA) and Cate School (4AA) hosting matches. Dos Pueblos, the Channel League champion, is seeded third in Division 1AA and received a bye into the second round Thursday, as did Laguna Blanca in Division 4AA. Santa Barbara is the top-seeded team in Division 2 girls tennis and will open the playoffs on its home courts Thursday.

Channel League boys water polo co-champions Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos both will have home games Wednesday evening in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

UCSB’s soccer team enters the postseason with a Big West Tournament semifinal match Wednesday night against visiting UC Davis. With a victory, the second-seeded Gauchos would either travel to top-seeded UC Irvine or host UC Riverside in the championship match Saturday night.

Dos Pueblos, coming off a 20-12 win over Santa Barbara, will try to cap its push for the football playoffs with a Thursday night home game against San Marcos. Santa Barbara might still qualify for the playoffs with a win over Buena.

On Friday night, Bishop Diego and Carpinteria will take the football spotlight at La Playa Stadium. Bishop has won the Frontier League championship, while Carpinteria could share the Tri-Valley League title if Nordhoff loses to Oak Park this weekend.

UCSB hosts Chapman in a season-opening men’s basketball game Friday night. Two other Gaucho teams play their home finales Saturday — the water polo men against UC Irvine and the volleyball women against Cal Poly.
