What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and young adults worldwide. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually think, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. It obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

Ten million people (one out of every seven Americans) are silent carriers of the defective gene. In 1955, children born with CF often died before reaching elementary school. Today, as a result of the medical advances made by the CFF, the predicted median age of survival for people with CF is in the mid thirties. Despite these advancements, there is still no cure for CF, and far too many young people are losing their battle to this fatal disease.

Partnering For A Cure

We hope that you will consider supporting 2011 Santa Barbara Great Strides walk. Your involvement with the CFF helps promote awareness of the cause and will go a long way toward helping fund research to find a cure. The Foundation is one of the most effective and efficient organizations of its kind. Ninety cents on every dollar raised will benefit the Foundation. The Foundation works with Vertex Pharmaceuticals and this year has had promising results from a number of their clinical trials. VX 770 is a drug designed to treat the underlying cause of CF – a faulty gene and its protein product called CFTR. The Foundation is getting so close to finding the cure and we need your support now more than ever.
