Celebrating Día de los Muertos with Artistic Flair

Local Mexican cultural arts center and museum to host exhibit and celebration

Drawing on objects from its permanent collection, Casa Dolores, Center of the Study of the Popular Arts of Mexico, will be hosting a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibition and invites the public to attend its opening celebration. The gallery includes a traditional altar remembering and honoring creative Mexican icons such as Cantinflas and Frida Kahlo, two jovial skeleton scenes, a film, and an exploratory bookshelf. Some of the pieces highlighted are a variety of “Day of the Dead” skulls and skeletons created in mediums ranging from papier maché to ceramic. During the opening, guests will enjoy favorite festivity fare, champurrado y pan de muerto, Veracruz-inspired music by Chucumite, and arts and crafts activities (sugar skull decorating, paper flower making, face painting). The event is free.

* Date: Saturday, October 29, 2011

* Time: 1 pm – 3 pm

* Place: Casa Dolores │ 1023 Bath Street │ Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Says curator Carmen Geiler, “Mexico once again offers us a cultural practice full of color and flavor. It is the result of the syncretism of pre-Hispanic and Christian practices. We join in commemorating Día de los Muertos and celebrate that death is also part of the cycle of life.”

Casa Dolores is devoted to the collection, preservation, study, and exhibition of an extensive variety of objects of the popular arts of Mexico. The center’s mission is to expand the passion of Mexican Arts and Crafts with the community and visitors by stimulating the appreciation of the Mexican culture through educational programs, demonstrations, and free access to exhibits and the center’s library.
