Becoming Californio

Louise Pubols, PhD, Will Lecture on the Historic De la Guerra family and its Legacy in Santa Barbara and Early California

This Friday, September 16, historian Louise Pubols, PhD, will deliver a talk titled Becoming Californio: Jokes, Broadsides, and a Slap in the Face, as part of the Sounds and Stories from Early California lecture series hosted by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. Pubols will present stories from her in-depth studies on the elite and powerful De la Guerra family, whose roots in Santa Barbara date back to the Mexican-American War. The talk takes place at Casa de la Guerra (15 E. Canon Perdido St.) — the former home of the fifth Presidio comandante, José de la Guerra, one of S.B.’s wealthiest and most influential citizens during the early 1800s. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are free for Historic Preservation members and $5-$10 for nonmembers. Call 965-0093 for more info.
