TOP SPORTING EVENTS: SEPTEMBER 13-19

Fall sports are in full swing, but on Wednesday (Sept. 14), it will be all about baseball for friends and former teammates of pitcher Dylan Axelrod (Santa Barbara High and SBCC). They will be closely following the game between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers beginning at 11:10 a.m. PDT. Axelrod is slated to make his first major league start for the Chisox against Detroit’s Brad Penny.

Dos Pueblos High’s Elings Aquatic Center, home of the nation’s No. 1 girls water polo team the past several years, will be visited by the No. 1 boys team on Thursday. Orange County power Mater Dei will face DP’s Chargers at 5 p.m. The game is a prelude to a weekend tournament that will be hosted by Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High. The SB Dons are ranked No. 7 in the CIF Division 1.

The Chargers and Dons have tough assignments in football Friday night, facing a pair of 2-0 teams from Lompoc. The Cabrillo Conquistadores will visit Dos Pueblos, while Santa Barbara travels to take on the Lompoc Braves, who will be playing their first home game since winning a CIF championship last year. “There’s going to be a packed stadium,” Dons coach Jaime Melgoza says.

Bishop Diego, which lost a 23-22 thriller at Santa Ynez last weekend, will play its home opener at La Playa Stadium against San Luis Obispo Mission Prep. It’s the game of the week on Radio 990 AM (7:30 p.m. kickoff). Carpinteria, coming off a 22-8 victory at Morro Bay, will be home against Nipomo.
