Local youth will serve as the artistic power behind a community mural painting project at Antioch University Santa Barbara (AUSB), allowing them to become facilitators in empowering an artwork of creativity and expression in celebration of Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month. The mural depicts the journey from the agricultural fields to higher education that many Latino immigrants experience.

Lead artist, Victoria Trigueros, an art major at Allan Hancock College, states that she “is very happy for the opportunity. The mural is about the culture I grew up with. It was easy to come up with the idea for the mural because it’s what my grandparents went through.” Trigueros graduated from Pioneer Valley High School in 2009 in the same year that her mom, AUSB Alumna, Alicia Trigueros, graduated with her baccalaureate. Trigueros has had her work displayed at the Allan Hancock Ann Foxworthy Gallery in Santa Maria. Other youth involved in the mural project include Michael Trigueros, Angel Trigueros, and Jacob Cardenas. Volunteers include AUSB Alumni Ingrid Elken and Donna Mathes. Local merchant, Art From Scrap, donated paint to the project.

The mural will debut at the AUSB-hosted Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Mixer on Thursday, September 22nd, from 5:30pm-7:30pm.
